Welcome to a gardener’s photo journal of a yard garden under the canopy of shade trees. This garden started as hard packed clay with sparse grass under the shade of old, crowded trees on a hillside. It is a work in progress which started almost twenty years ago.

There were several reasons why a yard garden was created to replace a lawn: to reduce lawn mowing time (although it was mostly stirring up dust between sparse sprigs of grass), to halt and prevent further erosion of the yard, to provide a beautiful and inviting yard to look at and be in, and to provide a habitat and sanctuary for wildlife.

The photos are here for your viewing enjoyment, BUT please be aware that all text, photographs, designs, illustrations, and artwork are the property of Kalia Calhoun and protected by copyright law and may not be used in any way without her permission, unless stated as otherwise.
